ThunderCats wiki

Hey all, I'm Devilmanozzy, the bureaucrat and administrator of the ThunderCats Wiki, where I have been working since August 2010 to create the best ThunderCats encyclopedia possible, just like you all have been doing here. Since we are both striving to accomplish the same goal, I wanted to see if you are open to the idea of merging our both encyclopedias.

Why merge you may ask?

Both wiki's have long histories, with TC Wiki starting back in July 2006 and this one in December 2009. Since we are covering the same topic, we are competing with each other for the best SEO ranking (the place we appear on whenever someone searches for a resource on ThunderCats), which leads to neither of us being the best we could be.

That's just a technical benefit to combining forces. The more prominent reason lies in the old saying "many hands make light work". Fandom is build around the idea of synergy, people working together to make the best out of something they couldn't have achieved on their own. We both already have created great content, but if we would combine our efforts, we could do even better!

For a while now, Fandom and Gamepedia have been working on UCP (Unified Community Platform). As of July 28, 2020, TC Wiki has been migrated to the new platform, which is why I also come to you all now with this proposal to merge: new platform, new start.

But there is more to UCP than a platform change. As anyone will tell you, a Unified Community is a goal in more than one way. Fandom and Gamepedia wikis are all going to be moved to the UCP platform and in some cases wikis will be merged. Mergers are due to wikis having similar subject matters and to get rid of redundancy. ThunderCats is a subject matter that has a small fan circle, and having only one wiki dedicated to the subject is better than dividing people's attention over two. We are all working very hard to create the best content we can, but we also would like to have as much people read the content we created. We have better chances of achieving that by combining our content.

The Merger

TC Wiki and TCH Wiki have different strengths and weaknesses. When comparing the two wikis, I feel like the strengths for this wiki lie with the rather well put together sections for the ThunderCats 1985 Original TV Series and the 2011 TV Series. Notable all content is rather fleshed out and written in detail (I really commend you on your efforts there!) If they would be combined with the TCW, they could benefit even more from the portable infoboxes (which increases the user experience for the readers) and attract even more people. Another section I am really impressed about are the comic and merchandise pages here, which for the most part are the same or better than TC Wiki.

TC Wiki on the other hand has pretty much went full motion forward covering the ThunderCats Roar series and sister series SilverHawks and TigerSharks. Additionally, the TC Wiki has a solid structure and overall well-rounded design in place that can highlight the content. Data shows that the TC Wiki also attracts more monthly visitors, which could, due to a merger, also be exposed to the content you've all written.

Ultimately, both wikis have different content in places and with a merger would combine the best of both.

How would this happen

There is no denying that it is never as easy as it appears. Porting over content from one wiki to another is daunting of and on itself, as it will require lots of back and forth checking to ensure the best of both is preserved and combined.

Apart from just content discussion, there are also more technical things to figure out as this wiki has some unspecified agreements with outside fan websites, which probably should be addressed (and ideally brought along with us on the merger). Further we will have to have a conversation about design on the front page, the category tree, design choices on category pages, and in a few cases, repetitive article concepts. In any case, we can ask Fandom on help with all of this to help smooth things over for all of us.

I would love to hear back from any of you about anything, from concerns, ideas, or suggestions about this idea. I really hope we can have a fruitful and constructive conversation about this idea and carry it out in a way that works for all of us!
